About St. Croix

St. Croix, Virgin Islands

St. Croix is the largest of the three US Virgin Islands including St. John and St. Thomas. It is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide covering 82 square miles with a population of approximately 55,000. Its vegetation ranges from the semi-arid flora in the east to a tropical rain forest in the west. Seven countries have flown their flags over St. Croix, including Spain, Netherlands, England, France, Knights of Malta, Denmark, and the Unites States of America. The island was originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib Indians. It was the Carib Indians that Columbus encountered on his second trip to the new world, in 1493, when he made landfall at Salt River on the north shore of St. Croix. St. Croix is on Atlantic Standard Time, AST is one hour earlier than Eastern Standard Time and the same as Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Christiansted, the main town on St. Croix, is located on the north shore about mid-island. It is known for its duty-free shopping, art galleries, picturesque harbor, and fine restaurants and island bars. If you enjoy a nice beer, be sure to try www.fortchristianbrewpub.com. The beer is super and the harbor views even better. In Christiansted, you can find many examples of Danish architecture in the town's buildings dating back to the 1700's, and the restored Fort Christianvaern. Walking through town, shopping, and drinks or a meal along the waterfront are a must for your trip.

On the west side of the island is the other main town, Fredericksted. Fredericksted is one of two deep water ports and where cruise ships may dock. There are also restaurants and shops along with a beautiful shoreline. When traveling here, be sure to visit the rain forest and the Mt. Pelier Domino Club, the home of the beer drinking pigs.

Much of St. Croix's charm lies in the gently rolling hills, vast stretches of beach, and the many ruins dotting the island -- over 100 sugar mills and great houses left from the plantation days. It is this blend of old Caribbean charm and modern day activities that will ensure your vacation will be a memorable experience.
